Starting from July 2024, we and Leeds Autism AIM are running a series of regular webinars on a range of topics affecting autistic adults. They will be delivered by members of the AIM staff team and are run online on Zoom.

July 2024: Autism and Identity

In our first webinar, Gill talks about:

  • What we mean by ‘identity’ and how it relates to autism.
  • How processes of identification and diagnosis can impact how autistic people see ourselves.
  • How others see us (and why it matters).
  • Some identity-related strategies to support well-being and self-esteem.

September 2024: Family and Relationships

In this webinar, Gill talks about:

  • The “Double Empathy Problem” and its impact on relationships between autistic and non-autistic people.
  • Challenging the myth that problems of interaction and ‘rapport’ between autistic and non-autistic people are a one-sided issue.
  • How to manage and maintain relationships when you have just been diagnosed as autistic – Finding words and addressing questions and challenges.
  • How to look after ourselves in relationships – Including managing the effects of ‘rejection sensitivity’ and lived experience of discrimination, and keeping ourselves safe.
